So four young ladies growing up in the Dominican Republic are the narrators of this novel and the question is "Why all four narrators and not just one?". These four young ladies seem to see life completely different from each other and at the beginning it seems as if they are all wound up in childish things but they actually portray the life style they were having to follow under the control of Trujillo. Julia Alvarez probably wrote the novel from different points of view so that we could put ourselves in one of those four girls shoes and understand or picture ourselves in a place like that with those problems. Also we are taught how they end up with the same ideals in their own way and that they are called Las Mariposas or The butterflies. It is important to understand that this story is Started by Dede the surviving sister which brings life to the story and that is why it is hard to understand Julia Alvarez idea of writing this novel with more than one narrator.
